The South Carolina lawmaker began feeling unwell shortly after speaking with President Trump on Saturday evening. Despite being urged by associates to seek urgent care, Graham insisted on waiting until after his scheduled Sunday appearance on NBC’s "Meet the Press." He remained focused on his legislative priorities until the end, citing the need to finalize Russia sanctions, address Iranian policy, and secure Israeli-Saudi normalization.
Graham’s final days were defined by his push for a bipartisan sanctions package, developed alongside Senator Richard Blumenthal. Just before his death, he claimed to have secured White House support for legislation intended to provide President Trump with new tools to counter Russia and influence the conflict in Ukraine. While his office initially attributed his passing to a sudden illness, medical examiners later confirmed the cause as an aortic dissection linked to atherosclerosis.
Following the announcement, a wave of unfounded conspiracy theories surfaced online, with some social media users baselessly suggesting foul play by foreign entities. The involvement of the FBI in the preliminary review of the circumstances—standard practice in the death of a high-ranking federal official—fueled further groundless speculation regarding the senator's final hours.
