Mozambique Deploys Drone Pilots to Counter Climate Hazards

Thirty newly certified drone pilots have joined Mozambique’s emergency response network, marking a strategic shift toward aerial technology in the country's battle against intensifying cyclones and floods. Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levi oversaw the graduation, emphasizing the role of these specialists in gathering time-sensitive data for search and rescue operations.

The initiative, which concluded after a 15-month implementation phase, addresses the increasing frequency of climate-driven disasters that threaten Mozambican infrastructure and coastal communities. Supported by a US$967,000 grant from the Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation Trust Fund, the program moves beyond basic equipment delivery to establish a sustainable framework for digital disaster management.

Technical experts from Busan Technopark, Hojung Solution, and PNU Drone collaborated with local institutions to tailor the technology to the country's specific geography. The effectiveness of this integration was already tested during the severe floods of early 2026, where drone teams provided real-time assessments that accelerated deployment for national authorities. Beyond emergency response, the pilots received training in infrastructure management and agricultural surveying, positioning the program as a cornerstone for future digital development. African Development Bank Country Manager Rômulo Cunha Corrêa noted that the project builds a long-term system of innovation, ensuring that Mozambique maintains the expertise to utilize sensors and geospatial tools long after the initial training concludes.
