Gauteng Launches Massive Surgical Drive for Mandela Month

1,078 surgeries are scheduled across 19 Gauteng public hospitals this July, a significant expansion of the province's annual surgical marathon. By dedicating additional theatre time to clear long-standing backlogs, the health department aims to provide life-altering care to patients waiting for everything from cataract removals to complex cardiac interventions.

The fourth edition of this campaign surpasses the 806 procedures completed last year, reflecting a concerted effort to stabilize surgical services. More than 20 medical specialties are involved, including orthopaedics, neurosurgery, and oncology. These procedures are designed to restore mobility, vision, and long-term health for patients who have faced months or years of delays in the public system.

Beyond routine operations like hernia repairs, the initiative tackles high-stakes interventions such as cochlear implants and paediatric reconstructive surgery. The department is supported in this endeavor by civil society partners, including Gift of the Givers, the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa, Operation Healing Hands, and Envision Africa, which are contributing specialized personnel and essential medical equipment.

This marathon serves as the provincial centerpiece for Mandela Month, aligning with the 2026 theme of combating poverty and inequity. By prioritizing these clinical backlogs, the department views the initiative as a practical application of the public service values championed by Nelson Mandela. The program emphasizes that beyond the clinical metrics, each operation directly impacts a patient’s ability to participate in work, education, and family life.
