Sanaa Airport Strike Shatters Yemen’s Fragile De-escalation

A single airstrike on Sanaa’s international runway has effectively ended the relative calm in Yemen’s decade-long conflict. While the Saudi-backed government justifies the targeting of the tarmac to block an incoming Iranian aircraft, the Houthi movement has labeled the maneuver blatant aggression and vowed immediate retaliation against the coalition.

Sanaa Airport Strike Shatters Yemen’s Fragile De-escalation

The incident occurred when government forces moved to intercept a plane suspected of carrying Iranian cargo. Although the aircraft managed to divert to Hodeidah, the strike on the capital’s primary transit hub marks a significant departure from the 2022 truce that had largely stabilized the front lines. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree confirmed that the group considers the de-escalation period over, signaling a potential return to active cross-border hostilities.

This friction is further complicated by accusations from Yemen’s information minister, who claimed the Houthis detained a Red Cross vessel at the airport, adding a humanitarian layer to the security standoff. With the regional landscape already volatile due to the ongoing Israel-Gaza war, the fragile balance between the Iran-aligned factions and the Saudi-led coalition appears increasingly untenable. The conflict continues to pull in disparate regional players, including UAE-backed separatists in the south who remain at odds with the broader power structure.
