EU Ministers Stall on Record-Breaking Russia Sanctions Package

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys has issued a sharp warning against prioritizing economic preservation over security as European Union diplomats gather in Brussels to debate a massive 21st sanctions package against Russia, a proposal currently stalled by internal disagreements over energy controls and maritime trade restrictions.

EU Ministers Stall on Record-Breaking Russia Sanctions Package

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas confirmed that the draft proposal targets 250 individuals and entities, representing the most extensive expansion of the bloc's restrictive measures to date. Despite the scale, consensus remains elusive as foreign ministers clash over the specifics of a proposed maritime services ban and tightened regulations on Russian liquefied natural gas imports.

Budrys characterized the hesitation of his counterparts as a dangerous trend, urging the union to decouple its geopolitical strategy from immediate commercial concerns. The ongoing deliberations serve as a critical stress test for the bloc’s collective resolve, highlighting the deepening rift between member states advocating for maximum pressure and those wary of the potential economic fallout from further decoupling from Russian energy markets.
