The detention extends beyond political figures, as Iltija’s sister, Irtiqa Mufti, reported being confined to the home since July 12. Irtiqa, who maintains no political affiliation, questioned the necessity of her own detainment, labeling the measures an arbitrary suppression of movement. The family’s accounts directly challenge the Jammu and Kashmir administration’s ongoing narrative of normalcy, suggesting that political dissent continues to be met with immediate containment.
Beyond the immediate political fallout, Iltija Mufti shifted focus to the ecological integrity of the region. She alleged that a powerful mafia is driving illegal hotel construction within Pahalgam, an ecologically sensitive zone. According to her statements, these unauthorized projects are encroaching upon critical flood channels and forest land, threatening the long-term environmental stability of the area. These accusations highlight a growing friction between local authorities and opposition voices over both governance and the rapid, often unregulated, development of Kashmir’s landscape.
