Assam Incinerates Narcotics Worth ₹472 Crore in Anti-Drug Push

Standing before a furnace at the 14th Assam Police Battalion’s premises in Nalbari, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma oversaw the destruction of narcotics valued at ₹472.51 crore. This event marks the latest escalation in a statewide campaign to dismantle trafficking networks and curb the flow of illegal substances through the region.

The scale of the crackdown is significant, reflecting a broader strategy to transform Assam from a transit hub into a hostile environment for traffickers. According to Sarma, the state police now seize more than ₹1,000 crore in illicit drugs annually. Over the past five years, authorities have registered nearly 3,300 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, resulting in the recovery of contraband worth ₹3,227 crore.

To sustain this momentum, the government is installing a specialized incineration unit at Daulashal, provided by the Union government. Over the next ten days, officials plan to destroy additional stockpiles of heroin, cannabis, and methamphetamine. Senior BJP spokesperson Brojen Mahanta credited the Chief Minister’s leadership for the intensified operations, which are now bolstered by an inter-state coordination mechanism established under Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Sarma claims that since the party's rise in West Bengal, Assam has seen a measurable decline in its utility as a primary transit corridor for drug syndicates.
