Philippine Foreign Minister Maria Theresa Lazaro led the charge for direct access to the detained Nobel laureate, pushing for transparency regarding her health and the conditions of her confinement since the 2021 military coup. While the session provided a rare venue for face-to-face dialogue, the path forward remains obstructed by the junta’s persistent rejection of the regional bloc’s five-point peace framework. Myanmar’s parliament has previously dismissed these efforts as prohibited interference in internal affairs, creating a diplomatic stalemate that has largely paralyzed regional intervention.
Despite this friction, ASEAN representatives reaffirmed their commitment to the existing consensus, prioritizing sustained engagement over isolation. The current focus centers on securing humanitarian corridors and maintaining a fragile channel for future negotiations. By refusing to abandon the table, the bloc aims to prevent total regional decoupling from the crisis, even as the military government continues to resist external oversight of its internal security measures.
