Myanmar Junta Claims Aung San Suu Kyi is in Good Health

Myanmar’s foreign minister has moved to quiet growing regional concerns over the condition of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi, assuring Southeast Asian counterparts that she remains in good health. The remarks, delivered during a Sunday meeting, come as ASEAN struggles to maintain influence over the country’s volatile political trajectory.

Philippine foreign minister Maria Theresa Lazaro, who serves as the ASEAN special envoy on Myanmar, relayed the update during a press conference following the regional summit. Lazaro noted that the Myanmar representative referred to the detained Nobel laureate as a sister, explicitly emphasizing a commitment to her ongoing well-being and care. This update arrives amid long-standing international pressure regarding the conditions of Suu Kyi’s detention, which has remained a primary point of contention since the 2021 coup. While the junta continues to face isolation from much of the global community, these assurances represent a calculated effort to manage diplomatic friction with ASEAN members who have repeatedly demanded transparency regarding the status of Myanmar’s political prisoners.
