Internal Fractures Threaten Punjab Congress Ahead of Assembly Polls

“The Congress is a party that faces no threat from external enemies. Its own members tear each other apart,” says BJP leader Fatehjung Singh Bajwa. As assembly elections loom in Punjab, the party faces a credibility crisis fueled by open infighting and allegations of compromised leadership within its own ranks.

Bajwa, a former Congress member himself, claims the party has effectively dropped out of the race for power. He suggests that holding onto their current 18 seats would be a best-case scenario given the internal chaos. His critique centers on alleged backroom dealings, specifically citing speculation regarding state unit head Raja Warring and his relationship with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

This discord stems from the contentious decision to keep Warring at the helm of the state unit. The move has alienated factions that lobbied for former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to lead the charge. While AICC General Secretary Bhupesh Baghel insists there is no resentment in the ranks, party figure Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has publicly flagged the need for unity, warning against leadership that may have prioritized personal interests over party success.
