Political Tensions Flare Over West Bengal Shaheed Diwas

Thirteen lives lost in a 1993 police firing have become the center of a bitter struggle for historical ownership in West Bengal. As the Trinamool Congress prepares for its annual July 21 observance, opposition leaders are accusing the ruling party of hijacking a commemoration that originally belonged to the Congress movement.

BJP leader Dilip Ghosh, speaking from Kharagpur, argued that the day should remain a neutral tribute to all victims of the Left Front era rather than a platform for partisan display. The event marks the anniversary when police opened fire on Youth Congress activists, a tragedy that remains a foundational trauma in the state’s political narrative.

Simultaneously, the Leader of Opposition, Ritabrata Banerjee, has condemned the Kolkata Police for denying permissions for opposition-led observances. Labeling the decision a blow to democratic expression, he confirmed that his faction intends to move forward with their plans despite the official rejection. The clash underscores a deepening divide over who holds the legitimate right to claim the legacy of the 1993 protest.
