Roads turn to death traps as wildfires claim eleven lives in Andalusia

Eleven people are dead and nineteen remain missing after a fast-moving wildfire swept through the rural mountains near Los Gallardos. While officials ordered some residents to shelter in place, panic drove many to abandon their homes, leading to fatal attempts to navigate blocked mountain roads and dry riverbeds in the smoke.

The tragedy unfolded as flames closed in on the hamlet of Bédar, prompting residents to flee despite conflicting evacuation directives. Antonio Sanz, the regional head of emergencies, stated that those who chose to stay in their homes were largely spared, as the fire did not reach most of the village. Conversely, those who ignored the recommended evacuation routes found themselves trapped by shifting fire lines.

Emergency responders discovered four victims inside a single vehicle, identified by its right-hand steering wheel as likely British citizens. Seven others perished after abandoning their cars in a desperate bid to escape on foot. Regional President Juanma Moreno acknowledged the primal instinct to run, noting that local knowledge often fails when smoke obscures the terrain and fire cuts off primary exits. As of Friday, authorities continued the grim task of identifying the victims—ten of whom are believed to be foreign nationals—while families worldwide turned to social media to track down missing loved ones trapped in the valley.
