Police probe half-million in donations to Reform UK

London’s Metropolitan Police are scrutinizing at least £500,000 in donations made to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party, acting on a referral from the Electoral Commission. The investigation centers on potential violations of political finance laws, including the possible concealment of funding sources ahead of the 2024 General Election.

The inquiry, launched in February 2025, focuses on payments linked to the mother of George Cottrell, a long-standing political ally of Farage who served time in a U.S. prison for wire fraud. Detectives have questioned two individuals regarding the transactions, though no arrests have been made. Investigators are examining whether the party received information that misrepresented the true origins of the cash, a clear breach of electoral oversight rules.

Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice dismissed the police action as a politically motivated smear campaign. This scrutiny arrives as Farage faces broader pressure over his financial transparency, including questions surrounding undisclosed gifts from a cryptocurrency billionaire. Attempting to regain momentum amid these mounting scandals, Farage recently resigned his parliamentary seat to trigger a by-election, aiming to secure a fresh mandate from his constituents. Despite his efforts, the party's support has stumbled, with recent polling placing Reform in third place behind Labour and the Conservatives.
