Greece secures temporary summer fuel price cuts

With summer travel plans intensifying, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a government-brokered agreement with the nation’s two primary oil refineries to lower pump prices. The relief, intended to buffer household budgets against Middle East conflict-driven inflation, remains in effect through August.

Gasoline will drop by 10 cents per litre and diesel by 5 cents per litre under the deal, providing a reprieve for consumers during the peak holiday season. While Greece has seen salary growth and tax relief since 2019, purchasing power continues to lag behind the European average, leaving voters sensitive to fluctuations in the cost of living ahead of next year's parliamentary elections.

This move follows a series of interventions by the New Democracy party, including subsidies for fertilizers and ferry ticket discounts. Beyond the immediate fuel price reduction, the government has committed to broader consultations with retailers to lower the cost of essential food items starting in September.
