The White House Presidential Personnel Office executed the removal through a brief email sent to the two Democratic commissioners, informing them their positions were terminated effective immediately. The commission’s lone Republican appointee opted to resign during the same window. The agency, established by the 2002 Help America Vote Act, functions as a critical clearinghouse for election officials, overseeing the accreditation of laboratories and the maintenance of national voter registration forms.
These actions follow a period of sustained pressure from the administration regarding mail-in ballot requirements and ongoing challenges to the 2020 election results. Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes condemned the move as a dangerous escalation, arguing that dismantling the commission compromises the integrity of nonpartisan election oversight. While the Help America Vote Act grants the president authority to appoint successors to the commission, the administration has yet to outline a strategy for filling the vacancies or a timeline for restoring the agency’s functionality.
