Hugo Broos steps down as South Africa head coach

After weeks of speculation following South Africa’s historic World Cup knockout stage run, 74-year-old Hugo Broos has confirmed his departure from the national team. The veteran Belgian manager, who led the squad to its first tournament appearance in 16 years, insists his decision to leave the bench is final.

Broos revealed his plans during an interview in Belgium, clarifying that while he intends to step away from the daily grind of football management, he remains open to a consulting role. He described the move as irreversible, noting that he no longer wishes to dedicate 24 hours a day to the sport. The South African Football Association chairman has already initiated talks regarding a potential advisory position, with a final meeting scheduled for late July to determine if a formal arrangement can be reached.

During his five-year tenure, Broos became the longest-serving coach in the country’s history, overseeing a significant turnaround for the national program. Despite his retirement from active coaching, he remains pragmatic about his post-football life, joking that his wife is eager for him to stay busy rather than lingering at home. If the association proposes a flexible schedule involving periodic travel, Broos suggested he would consider maintaining a limited presence to support the team’s ongoing development.
