Clarifying her political intentions during an interview with Euronews, Lagarde insisted she is not a candidate for any office. She emphasized that her primary concern remains the protection of the European framework, asserting that she would advocate for these principles in whichever capacity proves most effective. This follows recent remarks that sparked uncertainty about her remaining at the ECB for the duration of her term.
Her comments arrive as the French political landscape faces significant upheaval, recently compounded by a court ruling that allows far-right leader Marine Le Pen to seek office despite an embezzlement conviction. Meanwhile, Lagarde addressed the ECB’s monetary policy in the face of rising inflation linked to the conflict involving Iran. She maintained that the bank’s medium-term strategy targets a 2% inflation rate within a three-year horizon. Despite market pressure for more aggressive interest rate hikes due to geopolitical instability, Lagarde stood by the bank’s existing projections.
