Maine Democrats scramble to replace Senate candidate after rape accusation

A sudden vacancy in Maine’s high-stakes U.S. Senate race has triggered a frantic scramble among Democrats, with six candidates entering the fray in less than 24 hours. The political scramble follows the abrupt withdrawal of progressive nominee Graham Platner, who exited the contest amid mounting scandals and a rape allegation.

The vacancy forces the party to regroup in record time, as the July 27 deadline to finalize the ballot for the November election looms. Platner, an oyster farmer and Marine veteran, saw his campaign collapse following reports of past offensive behavior and a specific accusation from a former romantic partner, Jenny Racicot, who alleges he raped her in 2021. Platner has denied the claim, calling it categorically false, though he admitted to past struggles with alcohol and mental health.

Among those vying for the nomination are Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who gained national prominence for her attempt to remove Donald Trump from the state's primary ballot, and state legislator Troy Jackson, who has already secured significant local endorsements. Other contenders include lawyer Nirav Shah, microbrewery owner Dan Kleban, former congressional staffer Jordan Wood, and social worker Paige Loud. While the candidates position themselves as political outsiders ready to challenge incumbent Republican Susan Collins, the party faces the logistical hurdle of selecting a replacement during an imminent nominating convention. Meanwhile, Republicans remain dismissive of the Democratic internal turmoil, with campaign officials signaling confidence that Collins will maintain her seat regardless of the party’s final pick.
