Mexico Shifts to Criminal Complaints Over U.S. Immigration Deaths

Fourteen Mexican nationals have perished in U.S. immigration custody, with three others killed during enforcement operations, prompting President Claudia Sheinbaum to announce a formal shift toward criminal litigation. The move marks a departure from traditional diplomacy, as Mexico seeks to hold individual officers and private detention operators accountable for these fatalities.

President Sheinbaum declared that her administration will no longer remain passive regarding the treatment of Mexican citizens abroad. The government plans to pursue criminal charges for potential human rights violations and homicides, targeting both federal agents and the private entities contracted to manage detention facilities. This escalation follows the recent shooting of 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by an ICE agent in Houston, an incident that ignited local protests and heightened tensions between the two nations.

Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco confirmed that previous diplomatic efforts to address these deaths have yielded no results. Consequently, the government is bypassing standard channels to engage directly with U.S. prosecutors. The scrutiny arrives amid a broader crackdown on undocumented residents, with at least six individuals killed in enforcement operations since January 2025. Neither the Department of Homeland Security nor the Department of Justice has provided a response to the pending legal action.
