Former Olympian faces felony charges in Lincoln Memorial pool case

David “Davey” Hearn, a 67-year-old former U.S. Olympic canoeist, appeared in Washington, D.C. Superior Court on Thursday to enter a not guilty plea. Federal prosecutors have charged the athlete with felony destruction of property, alleging he intentionally damaged the newly renovated lining of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool last month.

The incident centers on a $14.7 million renovation project that became a political flashpoint after the Reflecting Pool developed algae blooms and structural issues. President Donald Trump, who ordered the installation of an “American flag blue” liner, initially blamed the deterioration on sabotage. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro alleges that Hearn pulled at the material, causing over $1,000 in damages to a 2-square-foot section, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Defense attorneys maintain that the criminal charges serve as a distraction from a botched government renovation. Hearn acknowledges touching a piece of liner that was already detached while cycling near the National Mall, but he denies removing any material. While the administration previously claimed vandals caused extensive damage to the structure, no formal accusations regarding the alleged 300-foot gash or chemical tampering have been filed against Hearn or others. The Department of the Interior reports that six individuals were arrested for suspected vandalism during the weeks following the project's completion, leading to increased security patrols and temporary fencing around the site.
