Eskom Clears Five Provinces of Load Reduction Schedules

Across South Africa, five provinces have exited load reduction cycles as Eskom’s eradication program reaches a major threshold. By modernizing distribution networks and addressing systemic energy losses, the utility has restored standard service to 1.1 million people, hitting 65% of its current nationwide target ahead of the 2027 deadline.

Mpumalanga is the most recent region to join the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, and North West in achieving this stability. Eskom Group Executive for Distribution Junaid Munshi confirmed that while power generation has stabilized nationally, the utility is now channeling resources into Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. These regions remain the primary focus for infrastructure hardening to resolve the network overloading that necessitates supply cuts.

Eskom attributes the success of this initiative to a combination of equipment upgrades and a crackdown on illegal connections, meter tampering, and vandalism. These activities often trigger emergency circuit failures, forcing the utility to implement load reduction to protect transformers. To meet the March 2027 goal of nationwide eradication, the company is urging local communities to support the installation of smart meters and report infrastructure interference. Sustained progress relies on this partnership between technical teams and residents to secure the distribution grid.
