Residents in Choghadak, located roughly 20 kilometers from the facility, reported hearing multiple blasts throughout the day. This incident marks another escalation in the region, where strikes near the site have become a recurring concern during the ongoing Middle East conflict. The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) has tracked four such events near the plant since the hostilities began.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a stern warning in April, declaring that strikes in the vicinity of the station present an immediate threat to nuclear safety. The Bushehr plant, constructed with significant Russian involvement, currently operates a single reactor, with two additional units under development. Russia previously withdrew its personnel from the site as security conditions deteriorated. Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage across the targeted zones, though no fatalities have been reported by provincial officials.
