Myanmar Seeks ASEAN Re-entry at Bangkok Informal Summit

Five years after a military coup triggered its suspension from regional summits, Myanmar’s leadership is pushing to rejoin the ASEAN fold. Foreign ministers from the bloc are scheduled to meet with their Burmese counterpart in Bangkok on July 12, a session that marks a potential thaw in diplomatic relations.

The informal gathering, confirmed by Vietnam’s foreign ministry, serves as a litmus test for the junta’s efforts to normalize its standing within the ten-member organization. Since the 2021 military takeover and the subsequent descent into civil war, Myanmar has been barred from high-level meetings, leaving its seat largely empty at regional forums.

By engaging in this dialogue, the current army-backed government aims to re-establish its presence in ASEAN affairs and signal a shift toward integration. The outcome of the Bangkok talks remains uncertain, as the bloc balances its non-interference policy against the persistent regional instability stemming from the internal conflict in Myanmar.
