The diplomatic confrontation follows Britain’s decision to summon Iran’s charge d'affaires earlier this week. That action was prompted by the sentencing of two Romanian nationals linked to a 2024 attack on a journalist, an incident London officials explicitly tie to Tehran’s intelligence apparatus. Iranian authorities maintain a firm denial of any connection to the stabbing, dismissing the charges as fabrications intended to damage bilateral relations.
Alireza Yousefi, the ministry's Director General for Western Europe, delivered the formal protest to Ambassador Simon Shercliff. Beyond rejecting the accusations, Yousefi pivoted the narrative, accusing the United Kingdom of harboring networks hostile to Iranian interests. By demanding an immediate end to what Tehran describes as the hosting of these groups, the ministry sought to reframe the security dispute as a failure of British domestic policy rather than an instance of foreign interference.
