Trump Opts for Backup Jet Amid Scrutiny of Qatar-Donated Aircraft

President Donald Trump bypassed the recently refitted, Qatari-donated jet on Wednesday, opting instead for an older aircraft to conduct his international travel. The decision highlights growing unease regarding the luxury gift’s security protocols and the ballooning costs associated with its rapid, controversial retrofit.

The aircraft, enhanced by L3Harris Technologies, was intended to serve as a temporary solution while Boeing struggles with persistent delays in developing the next-generation Air Force One. However, the jet has become a focal point for critics who question the necessity of such opulence during a period of heightened geopolitical friction with Iran and Turkey. Democratic lawmakers have voiced sharp concerns over the security of its missile defense and communication systems, particularly given the project's price tag exceeding one billion dollars.

This stopgap measure is set to remain in play until at least 2028, the now-delayed delivery date for the bespoke 747-8 fleet. For the administration, the reliance on an older model underscores the logistical complications and mounting political pressure surrounding the mission's technical readiness as the current presidential term draws toward its close.
