Trump Threatens Trade Cutoff with Spain Amid NATO Tensions

Standing alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Ankara, Donald Trump launched a sharp rebuke against alliance members, labeling Spain a "wasted cause" and ordering Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to terminate all trade business with the country as frustrations over defense contributions and geopolitical priorities reached a boiling point.

The outburst followed Trump’s broader condemnation of the alliance, specifically citing a lack of support regarding Iran, which he termed the world’s leading state sponsor of terror. He characterized the current financial arrangement within NATO as unfair, claiming the United States bears a disproportionate burden in protecting Europe from Russian influence.

Beyond trade disputes, the president reiterated his long-standing interest in Greenland, dismissing Danish sovereignty concerns by arguing the Arctic territory is essential for global protection. While Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen maintains the island is not for sale, Rutte attempted to steer the summit toward existing agreements on expanding the U.S. military footprint in the region. European leaders are now struggling to pivot the Ankara agenda toward defense spending pledges to appease the White House.
