Punjab Police Officer Transferred Following US Extortion Charges

A Punjab police officer is facing a formal internal probe and a reassignment to police lines after US prosecutors accused him of orchestrating an extortion scheme from abroad. Authorities allege the officer leveraged his position to threaten a Los Angeles family with false murder charges to secure a $400,000 payout.

The officer, Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, was the station house officer at the Tanda police station when the allegations surfaced as part of the multinational 'Operation Hard Ball.' US prosecutors claim Nagra collaborated with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria crime syndicate to target victims by fabricating criminal evidence. According to the indictment, the syndicate provided Nagra with contact details for a family in Los Angeles, whom he then contacted to demand payment under the threat of filing groundless murder charges against their relatives in India.

Local authorities in Hoshiarpur acted after footage of an FBI briefing detailing the accusations circulated online. Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Malik confirmed that while the department has yet to receive official communication from New Delhi or the US government, an inquiry led by a Jalandhar superintendent has been launched. The investigation aims to verify the claims before determining if further disciplinary action or extradition proceedings are warranted. The charges against Nagra are part of a wider crackdown on 37 individuals linked to transnational crime networks operating across North America and Europe.
