Medical Staff Walk Out After Assault at Shashtri Nagar Hospital

Doctors at Shashtri Nagar Hospital halted services Wednesday, citing a breakdown in safety following an alleged assault by Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre. The protest highlights the mounting friction between healthcare providers and local officials, as the incident at the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal facility triggers a broader debate on professional security.

The confrontation, which Mhatre later characterized as a miscommunication rather than a deliberate attack, has drawn sharp rebuke from political figures across the spectrum. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Ramesh Sawant accused the ruling party of fostering a climate of lawlessness, while BJP MLA Pravin Darekar urged all parties to abandon physical violence in favor of formal grievance procedures.

Maharashtra Minister Pankaj Rajesh Bhoyar confirmed that a police investigation is underway. He described the assault as intolerable and pledged that the state would pursue strict legal consequences for those found responsible. Meanwhile, Rohan Krishnan of the Federation of All India Medical Association pointed to the incident as evidence of the persistent psychological and physical strain faced by medical staff, warning that such violence undermines the fundamental stability of the healthcare system.
