The shift toward digital billing is gaining momentum, with registered users jumping from 52,000 to 113,000 in just one year. Research from the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research indicates that each invoice processed digitally saves approximately 16 minutes of labor, equating to roughly NZ$11 in efficiency gains per document. Because many firms already utilize cloud-based accounting software, activation often requires only a simple settings update rather than a costly hardware overhaul.
Government agencies are leading by example, currently settling nearly 96 percent of their own invoices within 10 working days. This push for speed serves as a model for the private sector, where cash flow remains a primary hurdle for smaller operations. To cement these gains, a new mandate takes effect on 1 January 2027, requiring large government suppliers to adopt the system. This transition will also protect subcontractors by ensuring they receive payment terms equivalent to their larger corporate partners, effectively streamlining supply chain finances nationwide.
