ECI Extends Deadline in Trinamool Congress Leadership Dispute

With 58 dissident MLAs backing a challenge to the established leadership, the Election Commission of India has granted Ritabrata Banerjee’s faction until July 10 to substantiate claims regarding the Trinamool Congress’s internal structure and authorized signatories, prolonging a high-stakes standoff within the West Bengal party.

The Commission’s decision follows a previous deadline of July 6, which forced both camps to formalize their arguments for control. The faction led by Mamata Banerjee remains firm in its stance, with senior figure Kalyan Banerjee asserting that the National Working Committee’s mandate remains valid through 2027. This defense aims to neutralize allegations of illegitimacy raised by the breakaway group.

The ongoing friction highlights a fractured AITC, as the dissident faction seeks official recognition from the regulatory body to validate its influence. The upcoming July 10 submission date serves as a critical juncture for the party, which currently faces the threat of significant structural upheaval depending on the Commission's eventual determination.
