Vucic Damps Expectations for Rapid EU Enlargement

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has signaled a cooling of optimism regarding the European Union's near-term expansion, warning that candidate nations from the Western Balkans, alongside Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia, should not anticipate a swift entry into the bloc despite their ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure membership.

Addressing a conference of candidate countries, Vucic argued that the political climate does not favor a major enlargement in the coming years. His assessment casts a shadow over the ambitions of the Western Balkans, a region where progress remains uneven. While Montenegro has set an ambitious 2028 target for accession and Albania continues to push its bid, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia, and Kosovo remain significantly further from the finish line.

Contrasting this cautious outlook, Ruslan Stefanchuk, speaker of Ukraine's parliament, pressed for an accelerated timeline. He framed the integration of Ukraine as a strategic imperative to counter Russian influence. Despite broad political support for Kyiv's reform agenda, the path to full membership remains a complex, multi-year process that will require extensive structural alignment with EU standards.
