Trump Weighs F-35 Return for Turkey Amid Regional Friction

President Donald Trump is signaling support for resuming F-35 fighter jet sales to Turkey, a move intended to anchor the U.S.-Turkey alliance during the current NATO summit. The proposal tests the limits of congressional restrictions, which have remained firm since Ankara’s 2019 acquisition of Russian-made defense technology.

The path to a deal requires untangling the fallout from Turkey’s purchase of the S-400 air defense system. That acquisition triggered mandatory U.S. sanctions and a swift ejection from the F-35 manufacturing program. To bypass these legal barriers, officials are exploring a plan to relocate the Russian hardware to a third country, though no final agreement has been reached. Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the White House is auditing the proposal to ensure it aligns with existing federal statutes.

Opposition remains a significant hurdle. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a coalition of U.S. lawmakers have voiced concerns, arguing that such a transfer would disrupt the regional power balance. Despite these objections, the administration views the rapprochement as a vital strategic pivot, prioritizing the restoration of ties with President Tayyip Erdogan over the lingering friction caused by the S-400 controversy.
