Diplomatic Friction Grows Between Rome and Washington

A social media post disparaging Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has ignited a public spat between the Italian government and Donald Trump. While the White House and Rome scramble to project stability, the growing personal animosity threatens to shadow the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara where both leaders are slated to appear.

Diplomatic Friction Grows Between Rome and Washington

Italian officials are attempting to downplay the rift, describing the tension as a distraction from the broader strategic alliance. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto insisted on Sky TV that bilateral ties remain unshaken, suggesting that the foundation of the partnership transcends the erratic rhetoric of individual leaders. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani echoed this, urging a focus on long-term cooperation rather than the recent verbal sparring.

The conflict stems from Trump’s claims on Italian television that Meloni had begged for a photo opportunity at a previous G7 summit, an assertion the Prime Minister has denied. This follows Meloni's earlier public criticism of Trump’s remarks regarding Pope Leo, which drew a sharp rebuke from the former president. While the government maintains a posture of restraint, opposition figures like Azione leader Carlo Calenda have abandoned diplomatic decorum, taking to social media to aggressively defend Meloni and attack Trump’s character. With the 2026 NATO summit approaching, the silent friction between the two figures creates an unpredictable atmosphere for the alliance.
