Toyota Shifts Tacoma Production to Texas in $3.6 Billion Expansion

Under pressure to bolster domestic manufacturing, Toyota Motor Corporation is funneling $3.6 billion into a new 2.5-million-square-foot facility at its San Antonio campus. This strategic pivot moves mid-size Tacoma pickup production from Mexico to Texas, creating 2,000 jobs by the time the plant begins operations in 2030.

The expansion signals a departure from existing regional supply chains, as the company reallocates assembly lines currently housed at its Baja California plant. While the Tacoma will see a shift in its production footprint, Toyota intends to keep its Guanajuato facility operational. The San Antonio site will continue its focus on Tundra trucks and SUVs, effectively consolidating a larger portion of the company's North American truck output within the United States.

This investment aligns with broader industry adjustments following calls from President Donald Trump for automakers to increase U.S.-based production in response to rising tariffs on automotive components. Despite the shift, Toyota executives maintain that regional cohesion remains a priority, publicly advocating for the extension of North American free trade agreements to ensure the continued viability of their cross-border production network.
