Ukraine Faces Critical Air Defense Deficit After Missile Barrage

At least 26 people are dead following a massive Russian missile and drone assault on Ukraine, a strike that exposed the country’s deepening vulnerability as its stockpile of U.S.-made interceptors nears exhaustion. The attack hit just one day before a high-stakes NATO summit where air defense remains the primary agenda.

Rescue crews are currently combing through the wreckage of a partially destroyed high-rise in Kyiv, marking the latest chapter in a week of intensified violence. This barrage follows the deadliest strike on the capital this year, further straining emergency services and the nation's morale.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has issued an urgent call for Western partners to bolster defensive capabilities, citing a failure to neutralize the majority of incoming threats. Recent data shows that Kyiv’s air defenses intercepted only four out of 49 Russian ballistic missiles throughout July. With the NATO summit looming, the administration is pushing for immediate commitments to replenish interceptor supplies before current stocks are fully depleted.
