Police Detain Over 100 Protesters Ahead of Ankara NATO Summit

Riot police deployed tear gas in Ankara’s Kizilay Square as authorities detained more than 100 Communist Party of Turkey members. The crackdown preceded a high-profile NATO summit, where leaders from 32 allied nations are set to convene amid strict security cordons and city-wide demonstration bans.

Demonstrators gathered to chant slogans labeling the alliance a murderous entity, prompting immediate intervention from security forces. While the situation in Ankara turned volatile, similar protests in Istanbul’s Taksim Square remained peaceful despite a heavy police footprint. The government’s preparation for the summit has involved extensive barricades and a total prohibition on public gatherings in key zones.

Beyond the street protests, the state intensified its pressure on civil society through a series of anti-terror raids. These operations resulted in the detention of various journalists, academics, and activists. Tuncer Bakirhan of the pro-Kurdish DEM Party criticized the sweep, arguing that officials are leveraging national security concerns to suppress fundamental civil liberties. The arrests highlight deep-seated domestic friction as Turkey readies itself to host the international delegation.
