The investigation stems from the discovery of unaccounted, partially burnt currency inside Justice Verma’s official quarters on August 12, 2025. Following an internal inquiry, former Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna formally recommended his removal to the President and Prime Minister. This prompted the formation of a three-member committee tasked with reviewing the evidence and the merits of the impeachment motion.
Although Justice Verma submitted his resignation as pressure mounted, the document remains pending before the President. Because his departure has not yet received official approval, the parliamentary process remains active. The motion, which garnered signatures from 145 Lok Sabha members last year, highlights the constitutional rigor required to remove a judge in India, marking a rare and contentious chapter in the judiciary's recent history.
