Anbumani Ramadoss Leads Push Against Mekedatu Dam Project

With over 5.5 crore people relying on the Cauvery river, the proposed Mekedatu dam has become a flashpoint for regional tension. PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss is now demanding an urgent all-party meeting, citing a Karnataka State Wildlife Board survey that warns of severe environmental degradation should construction proceed.

The call to action follows the conclusion of a four-day protest march that underscored mounting public anxiety over water security. Ramadoss argues that the project poses an existential threat to Tamil Nadu, particularly during drought cycles, and has pressured the state government to adopt a more aggressive legal and political stance.

Tamil Nadu’s legislative assembly has already formally opposed the dam, citing constitutional disputes and potential violations of water-sharing agreements. While Karnataka officials maintain the project will not infringe upon downstream allocations, the lack of consensus keeps the dispute at a standstill. The PMK’s demand for a unified political front reflects the deepening rift between the two states over the management of the Cauvery basin.
