Taiwan Rallies Against China's New Ethnic Unity Legislation

Beijing’s newly enacted Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law has triggered a sharp rebuke from Taipei, which views the measure as a calculated instrument of transnational repression. Taiwan’s government warns the legislation serves as a legal veneer for expanding authoritarian influence and coercing political compliance across its borders.

Premier Cho Jung-tai confirmed the formation of a Cabinet-level interagency platform to counter the potential fallout from the law, which took effect on July 3. This task force is designed to streamline government responses to incidents of political intimidation and reinforce national security protocols against what officials describe as an attempt to force unification through legal maneuvering.

The Mainland Affairs Council contends that the policy shifts the burden of acceptance onto Taiwan by cloaking strategic territorial ambitions in the language of ethnic solidarity. By formalizing these requirements, Taipei argues that Beijing is actively weaponizing its internal legal framework to undermine the democratic sovereignty of its neighbors.
