The collapse of the multi-storey structure in the Taratala area exposed severe gaps in how the state manages industrial hazards. Minister Dilip Ghosh pointed to the historical absence of a dedicated state-level National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, which previously left the region reliant on delayed external assistance. Under the new mandate, the administration is establishing a 200-person reserve force specifically trained for deployment in high-risk zones, including the densely populated Kolkata metro and the ecologically vulnerable Sundarbans.
While the tragedy sparked immediate political friction, Ghosh has shifted the focus toward institutional accountability. He pledged rigorous legal action against those responsible for the illegal or substandard construction that led to the collapse, prioritizing structural reform over partisan maneuvering. This transition represents a departure from the administrative patterns of the previous fifteen-year tenure, moving toward a model where the state maintains its own strategic reserves rather than waiting for federal intervention.
