Goyal Signals Stalled Peru Trade Talks Amid Global Negotiations

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed on Friday that India’s proposed Free Trade Agreement with Peru has hit an impasse over market access disputes. While the Latin American deal remains frozen, the government is pushing forward with parallel negotiations involving Canada, Israel, and the European Union.

Speaking at the Toy Biz International B2B Expo 2026, Goyal emphasized that discussions with Canada are gaining momentum, with a new round of talks scheduled to begin Monday targeting a six-month completion window. Negotiations with Israel also persist despite regional instability in West Asia, though the Minister acknowledged that progress remains sluggish until broader peace is restored.

To solidify India’s economic footprint, Goyal announced an upcoming diplomatic mission to Brussels. He will join External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to engage the European Commission. This high-level dialogue focuses on the India-European Union Trade and Technology Council, serving as a critical mechanism to implement the finalized trade pact with the bloc. Amid global economic headwinds, Goyal pointed to India’s domestic resilience and a renewed focus on manufacturing quality as the primary engines for future industrial expansion.
