Maharashtra Initiates Push for Uniform Civil Code

Maharashtra is moving toward the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announcing the formation of an expert committee to draft state-specific legislation. This effort mirrors a broader national trend, aiming to align regional legal frameworks with constitutional principles of equality and uniform personal laws.

The proposed committee will evaluate current legal structures to build a proposal that reflects the vision of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar regarding legal uniformity. By looking to Uttarakhand’s recent legislative model, Maharashtra officials hope to navigate the complex social and legal dynamics inherent in personal law reform. The state joins a growing cohort of regions, including Gujarat and Assam, currently exploring similar common civil frameworks.

Political reactions remain divided along ideological lines. Shiv Sena spokesperson Manisha Kayande confirmed the party’s alignment with the reform, citing its long-standing commitment to the issue. Conversely, Congress leader Sachin Sawant cautioned that any legislative drafting must respect the historical consensus approach defined by the Directive Principles of State Policy, advocating for a more inclusive process to avoid social friction.
