Maharashtra Initiates Legislative Framework for Uniform Civil Code

Following the precedent set by Uttarakhand, Maharashtra is moving to establish an expert committee tasked with drafting a Uniform Civil Code. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the state’s intent during the monsoon session of the Assembly, aiming to reconcile personal legal frameworks with constitutional mandates for equality.

The proposed committee will analyze existing legal structures to build a proposal that addresses marriage, inheritance, and other personal laws. Fadnavis tied the initiative directly to the vision of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, framing the effort as a fulfillment of the Directive Principles of State Policy. By seeking to harmonize diverse personal laws, the state government hopes to establish a more uniform legal standard for its citizens.

Political reception remains divided. Shiv Sena representative Manisha Kayande voiced support for the transition, aligning with the party’s historical stance on the issue. Conversely, Congress leader Sachin Sawant urged caution, emphasizing that any legislative shift of this magnitude requires broad societal consensus to be effective. As the committee begins its review, the state looks to the implementation model in Uttarakhand as a primary reference point for its own regulatory path.
