Extreme Heat Forces Cancellation of Washington Independence Day Parade

A relentless heat wave forced organizers to cancel Saturday's Independence Day parade in Washington, D.C., as record-breaking temperatures swept across the eastern United States. With roughly 160 million Americans under heat warnings, the stifling conditions have disrupted public festivities, sports matches, and strained power grids from Miami to New York.

The National Weather Service recorded a peak of 102F in the nation's capital on Friday, surpassing the previous July 3 record of 101F set in 1966. The atmospheric pressure became too much for the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, where paramedics were forced to evacuate a young attendee suffering from heat exhaustion. Staffers shuttered the event shortly after, citing the safety of the crowds.

While some determined attendees like 76-year-old Hang Dang braved the sweltering conditions to reach the capital, the reality of the climate forced a widespread retreat. In New York, Con Edison reported outages affecting 60,000 residents as air conditioning demand peaked. Meanwhile, FIFA implemented mandatory hydration breaks for World Cup matches in Miami and Philadelphia, though officials remain concerned about the physical toll on players in games where the heat index is projected to hit 105F.
