Nation Remembers Swami Vivekananda on Nirvana Day

Across the political divide, India’s leadership gathered today to mark the Nirvana Day of Swami Vivekananda, the monk whose 1893 Chicago address fundamentally shifted how the West perceived Eastern philosophy. From the Union Cabinet to state houses, officials framed his legacy as a blueprint for modern national character.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led the tributes, emphasizing that Vivekananda’s teachings on self-reliance and social service remain vital to the country’s current developmental trajectory. Singh credited the monk with stripping away misconceptions about Indian traditions and replacing them with a robust, spiritually grounded identity that continues to inspire domestic policy.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu echoed these sentiments, focusing on the monk’s ability to project Indian spiritual consciousness onto the global stage. For Khandu, the legacy is anchored in the 1893 World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago, an event that remains a touchstone for how India engages with Western intellectual discourse today.
