The appearance, recorded in mid-June for the podcast "Storytime with the Second Lady," featured Trump reading "Presidents Play!"—a publication from the White House Historical Association. Rather than sticking to the text, the president used the illustrations as a springboard for commentary on his predecessors and his own physical fitness. When asked about his personal reading habits, Trump admitted he spends most of his time scanning newspapers for stories about himself.
His review of past commanders-in-chief was eclectic. He dismissed Barack Obama’s basketball skills and questioned his golf game, while labeling Richard Nixon as someone who "got himself into trouble." He jokingly remarked that Herbert Hoover’s self-invented game of "Hoover Ball" likely worked out better for him than the economy did. On the subject of his own health, Trump observed William Howard Taft’s record as the heaviest president, noting, "I have to be careful because I don't want to supersede his record."
The president also used the platform to look toward the future, mentioning a new ballroom under construction on the White House grounds. Closing the session, he offered a somber note to the child audience regarding the state of the nation, describing the country as being on a "little bit of a ledge" before promising to "make America greater than ever before."
