The investigation, spearheaded by the UK's National Crime Agency and Europol, spans seven nations, including the United States, Brazil, and Germany. Authorities have arrested 57 suspects and identified more than 150 individuals involved as either victims or perpetrators. Many survivors remained unaware of the abuse until contacted by law enforcement, as the attacks were frequently carried out by partners or acquaintances in the victims' own homes.
Nigel Leary of the NCA emphasized that drug-facilitated sexual assault has evolved from isolated incidents into a coordinated, digital-enabled phenomenon. Perpetrators utilized private forums to trade advice on specific substances and techniques to avoid police scrutiny, often dehumanizing their victims for years. This operation follows a series of high-profile convictions, such as the Dominique Pelicot case in France, which brought global attention to the systemic nature of such violence. Officials are now urging potential victims to come forward, noting that the current arrest count likely represents only a fraction of the actual harm inflicted globally.
