Kung’s assessment directly challenges recent political rhetoric suggesting that American facilities could soon dominate the global chip market. The minister confirmed that TSMC is currently committed to building 16 fabrication plants and advanced CoWoS packaging facilities within Taiwan. He maintained that no matter how many plants Washington incentivizes on domestic soil, the sheer volume and technical concentration of the Taiwanese infrastructure remain unmatched.
These comments arrived in response to claims by former President Donald Trump, who suggested the US could capture 50% of the chip market during a potential second term. While the geopolitical pressure to increase US investments grows, Kung expressed confidence in Chairman C.C. Wei to steer the company through these negotiations. The minister emphasized that ultimate decisions regarding production capacity and global expansion remain the prerogative of TSMC’s leadership, rather than the result of external political mandates.
