Moldova Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu Resigns

Citing irreconcilable personal principles, Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced his resignation on Friday, triggering the automatic dissolution of his cabinet. The move creates an immediate leadership vacuum, forcing President Maia Sandu to navigate a complex political transition just months into the government's current parliamentary term.

Munteanu, 62, confirmed his departure via social media, stating he could no longer execute his mandate in accordance with his convictions. A former World Bank official appointed following the Party of Action and Solidarity's victory in September 2025, he leaves the administration at a sensitive moment for the nation’s European integration agenda.

President Sandu must now initiate formal consultations with parliamentary factions to nominate a successor. While Munteanu provided few specifics regarding his exit, he maintained that his commitment to Moldova’s pro-European path remains intact. His departure places significant pressure on the ruling party to stabilize the executive branch and maintain support in a historically polarized political environment.
