Andhra Pradesh GST Figures Spark Political Clash

A 21 percent year-on-year surge in Andhra Pradesh’s GST collections for June 2026 has ignited a sharp dispute between former IT Minister Gudivada Amarnath and current cabinet minister Nara Lokesh. While Lokesh portrays the figures as a sign of economic momentum, Amarnath dismisses the data as a statistical illusion.

The YSRCP leader argues that the current growth is fueled by a distorted base effect. He noted that the state’s SGST, adjusted for IGST settlements, recorded a 7 percent decline during the same period last year, which mathematically inflates the recent gains. Amarnath maintains that the true health of the economy is better reflected by a two-year compounded annual growth rate of 7.9 percent, a figure he claims falls short of the performance seen during his party’s previous tenure.

Amarnath criticized Lokesh for using the revenue spike to promote a narrative of job creation and new investment without providing a deeper look at the fiscal reality. He urged the government to move past celebratory rhetoric and conduct a more rigorous analysis of the state's economic trajectory rather than relying on surface-level metrics to validate their policy claims.
